about the RRSMS

The Rhonda Swan Memorial Scholarship Fund (RSMSF), established in memory of the award-winning journalist, editor and author, is for students who are underrepresented in the field of Journalism, promotes Ms. Swan’s philosophy of Journalism, and expose her writings, lectures, and inspirational works toward Black uplift; especially in Black women.
American Journalists are trusted with enormous influence over political thought and trends; historically journalist has assumed responsibility for accountability in the use of taxpayers’ dollars. Most Americans get their news from newspapers, cable news shows, the internet, and literature in popular culture. Moreover, cable and broadcast news shows often depend on print journalism for their news leads. Black people are grossly underrepresented in both broadcast and print journalism. Even when holding prominent positions Black journalists are rarely given the independence to craft the content focus of their work. Rhonda Renee Swan’s life work was given to bringing enlightenment to the pages of the newspapers in which she wrote; in her books and blogs, and as a professional life coach. All the while assuming her roles as supremely loyal mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, cousin, friend, professional colleague, and chair of the Swan Family Council.
The Swan family designed the RRSMS to serve as a forum for social, economic, and political thought through journalistic scholarship. The Swan family overarching intent for the RRSMS is “change” and “impact”. To change the complexation of American journalists; and to impact the level (upward) of scholarship, enlightenment. and clarity. The Swan family wants RRSMS scholars to engage in scholarship which prepare them to interpret the times, take a stand on the side of reason, and brings realism to public discourse.
